The saint I chose for Confirmation is St.Angela Merici. Angela was born in 1474 at a small town along Lake Garda in Lombardy, Italy. Her parents died suddenly when she was only 15 years old and so she started living with her uncle. She became very distressed when her sister suddenly also died shortly after her parentswithout receiving the Last Rites of the Church . She soon joined the Third Order of St. Francis around the same time she saw a vision that told her that her sister was resting in heaven next to the saints. Angela's uncle died when she was 20 so she returned to her home town. When she returned she realized that some girls and young women aren't taught a lot about Christian education so she converted her home into a school and started teaching. Many years later on November 25, 1535, she joined 12 other women and they founded the Company of Ursula. Her goal was to elevate family life through Christian education for future wives and mothers. Over the years, many more people joined the group and in 1537 Merici was elected "Mother and Mistress" of this group. By the time Angela died in Brescia on January 27 1540, there were about 24 communities of the Company of Ursula serving the Church in the region. Angela Merici was beatified in Rome on April 30, 1768 by pope Clement XIII. She was canonized on May 24, 1807 by Pope Pius VII. Her feast day is January 27. At first when I was choosing my confirmation name I was going to choose Catherine for my grandmother (I call her Nana) who passed away when I was 2 months old. None of the Saint Catherines spoke to me though and none of them I wanted to choose. So I tried to look for other names like Jessica, Lucy, and Angela. When I read about Angela and looked at her pictures I think God was telling me to choose her. So I chose her. There are no really special reasons that I chose her just that I felt like I had to and that it was the right name for me. There is one slight other reason that I chose her though. One of the main things she is patron saint of is handicapped people or people with disabilities and illnesses. My cousin Malia who is ten is autistic so I think I should also choose the saint for her because I care about her a lot and I do always pray for her.
